Literally. I don't think there's a waitress out there who *hasn't* waited on a dummy at some point.

Darqstar posted something in her livejournal today that made me remember working at Pizza Den. (No! NO! THE MEMORIEEEESSS! ARRRGGGHH.....)

This table didn't have exact change and they were in a big hurry. I didn't carry money on me (Pizza Den was a dinky little place and we were NEVER busy so it wasn't necessary. Plus the manager discouraged it so we wouldn't wander off with his money.) They pulled the whole "Well, I don't want to wait, you cover the change" thing and took back some of the money so it was less than the total of the bill. I was so shocked I think I stood there and literally stared at them. I told them I wasn't allowed to do that, hold on just one sec and I'll be right back with their change, but they ignored me completely and started to leave. I couldn't go to the manager - he always sided against the waitresses - so I ran to the assistant manager, a nice brawny guy named Donnie, and told them these guys were skipping on the bill. *grins* I suppose there was a less drastic way of handling it but at the time I was angry enough to enjoy the look on their faces. It was slightly more than spare change in this case... I think they were cheating me for almost $10.

At the time I was hassled, upset and panicking that I'd have to cover the $10. If I was lucky, I got three or four tables a night, and the average tip came to $5. I wasn't even making minium wage at this point (it was right before I quit) and I literally didn't *have* ten dollars.

As you've probably guessed, Darqstar had a similar problem at work and it made me think. I never leave a restaurant without tipping. Even if the service is only mediocre and the waitress grumpy I tip. I mean, if the server forgets I'm there and is rude and spits in my food I won't tip, but that's never happened. I would *never* expect the waitress to cover my bill. I mean... what's wrong with people?

"Excuse me, Mr. Taxi Driver? I don't have $24.75 exactly and I don't want to wait for you to dig out the change, so I'll give you a $20 and you can make up the difference. Toodles!"

I mean... Geez!

There are people out there that make me wonder.
