So, way back on November 4th I was on AIM with [livejournal.com profile] sidara and I was all like "Dude, if Obama wins, I am totally driving up for inauguration." And she decided that if I was going, she would fly out and join me. And then he won *pauses for the residual cheering to die down* and [livejournal.com profile] sidara calls me up and says, "I just bought my plane ticket."

So that's where I was this morning.

We drove up Sunday night to avoid the traffic. We left Hampton around 10:00pm and stopped in Richmond to visit [livejournal.com profile] kahn and [livejournal.com profile] deathgod02 before heading for DC. We got in to my brother's place around 4:00am and promptly crashed. We spent most of Monday walking around the city buying Obama buttons until we had to split up to go to dinner.

My brother got us tickets - a bunch of people in his office were on assignment, I guess, and couldn't be there, so they gave him extras. We were standing on the South side and - if I stood on my toes (which I DID) I could see pretty well. [livejournal.com profile] sidara mostly jumped up and down a lot and demanded we fill her in on the details. The inauguration itself was pretty cool and over pretty fast. The crowd was really into it, cheering and shouting and chanting "O-BA-MA!" and "YES WE CAN" over and over. I think Michelle, Malia and Sasha got more cheers than everyone else together. There was a temporary moment of ill-will when GW Bush walked out, but it passed pretty quickly. They didn't announce Cheney at all (or if they did it was drowned out by chanting), which was probably for the best.

But overall, everyone was in a fantastic mood. There were about 250,000 people where we were, a quarter of which were in the same line as us (so they tell us anyway, specific numbers may be off a bit), all standing for as long as six hours in the freezing cold and there was no shouting, no crankiness. There was a LOT of shoving, though. There was a point where I gave serious consideration to what we would do if someone fell.

I think Obama's speech was the best part. If you haven't heard it yet, go look it up. It must be on Youtube by now. The man is awesome.

We're back at my brother's. We're going to wait till the roads open up, and then probably drive back down after midnight again to avoid some of the traffic.

In the meantine: We did it, people. Yes we did. Welcome to America.
