I should not watch disaster/survival movies because I get really, really upset about the hordes of innocent bystanders who get tragically wasted.

In other news, apparently I find thigh holsters amazingly hot. Who knew?

In no particular order, I present:

Ten Female Characters Who Kick Ass

1) Yukimura Keiko, Yu Yu Hakusho: Honestly, most of the girls on this show rock, but Keiko's the only one who rocks without super powers. Also, she took on zombie teachers with cleaning supplies. How freaking awesome is that?

2) Toph Bei Fong, Avatar: the Last Airbender: Holy crap, have you even seen the show? Toph is amazing. She rocks. She's blind, which does not stop her from saving the world or kicking much ass - and she doesn't get all worshipful over the Avatar like some people do.

3) Samantha Carter, Stargate: Brains for the win. She's a Colonel in the USAF at this point, unless I'm mistaken, commanding the lost city of Atlantis AND she makes McKay act like a normal human being (every now and then). Yes, there was that whole cliched "falling in love with her main male co-star" thing, but I blame the writers. Also, she managed to do it without getting all sappy and useless and frankly a female character who DOESN'T throw her career away for love is possibly the best thing in the whole damn world. Now, admittedly, her double from the alternate universe is completely useless, but we can't blame Sam for that.

4) Turanga Leela, Futurama: You can argue with me all you want, but come on! Her wrist-lojack-amator? She's the only one who ever knows what's going on, she's kickass, she saves the world all the time and she somehow manages to stay completely(mostly) sane, even when she spends all her time with Fry and Bender. Dude, just watch the Wizard of Oz ep. Seriously. ("There's no place like - I wanna be a witch!")

5) Cathy Burton, MacDonald Hall: Four words: Evil Mastermind in training. Cathy will rule the world. She's the only person alive who can put Bruno in his place.

6) April O'Neil, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Is there anyone alive who isn't familiar with this character? Seriously? April is cool. Especially Archie Comics April and the April from the new cartoon series, but the original was no slouch, either.

7) Zoe Washburne, Firefly: Yeah, hello? Did you see the show? If so, then I don't even have to explain this. If not, then you need to watch it.

8) Sharon Hawkins, Static Shock: Sharon is awesome. I was torn between her and She-Bang, and Sharon won out by virtue of sheer attitude. If Lex Luthor had ever gone up against her he wouldn't be president right now. That's all I'm saying.

9) Juniper MacKenzie, Dies the Fire: The Witch Queen of the Clan MacKenzie! She saved dozens of people when the world ended, mostly through brains, foresight and careful planning. And she held them all together the same way (plus a little bit of sheer force of personality). Plus she didn't go all fairytale romancey over Mike Havel which gives her massive points.

10) Rachel, Animorphs: Her nickname is Xena, for goodness' sake. Yeah, she had some emotional problems toward the end there, but she was saving the world when she was thirteen - I think it's allowed. She did things adults couldn't do and managed to come thorugh mostly unbroken.
