marycrawford recently wrote quite enthusiastically about a book called The Last Sherlock Holmes Story (I'm too lazy to find the actual post she made). That's a book that's been sitting on my shelf for years. I read it once, a long time ago (the receipt, still in the book, is dated March 3, 2003 from the Short Pump Barnes & Noble in Richmond) and liked it quite a lot. After reading her post, I went back and reread it.

I love it still. I can't tell you too much about it for fear of ruining it, but even knowing what the plot twist is, I can tell you that the book held up on rereading. Everything works, and once you realize what's happening (there is, literally, a paragraph where all is revealed and you just read it seven or eight times thinking maybe you missed something but NO) there is absolutely no point at which you can go back and say "Aha! But this doesn't work because!" It's written into the Holmes mythology quite nicely and makes Holmes a very realistic character.

So, yeah. Read it, if you can find it. Sadly it's mostly out of print nowadays (and B&N only had 7 copies left in their distrobution and I ordered them all for our staff recs display) so it may be hard to find.

But it's totally worth it.
