Are we getting another hurricane and I just totally missed it? Because the weather is getting seriously violent out there. I mean, branches falling, lawn chairs flying, horizontal rain, nasty.

In other news!

Five things worth checking out:

#1) Where's Neil When You Need Him? - a collection of songs based on the writings of Neil Gaiman, written and performed by a variety of international artists. Includes a remastered version of A Sister Named Desire by Tori Amos. My favorite track is #9: We Won't Go by Hungry Lucy, which was inspired by the story The Wolves in the Walls.

#2) World War Z by Max Brooks - If you haven't read The Zombie Survival Guide I honestly don't know how you sleep at night. World War Z is Max Brooks's second "novel", a historical account and retelling of the Zombie War, now ten years in the past. This book is fantastic. Brooks takes himself and the subject seriously, collecting first-hand accounts of attacks, survivors, burning cities and painting a scene of what could happen again.

#3) His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik - Historical fantasy set during the Napoleonic Wars, this series poses one very simple and important question: What if France had dragons? If you haven't read this yet, now's your last chance to get on the bandwagon before it becomes "mainstream". Naomi Novik and Pete Jackson have been talking business, and there's rumors that a film version of the Temeraire books could start production in 2007.

#4) The Grudge - With Halloween coming up, now's the time to rent a scary movie. Forget The Ring (please, I mean it) and check out this instead. It stars Sarah Michelle Geller as Not-Buffy, but other than that it's a fun, scary movie that only takes itself as seriously as you do. Also, the last scene kept me up at night for days.

#5) Dark Water - do yourself a favor and don't rent the American remake. Usually I'm not too picky, but in this case the original is a hundred times creepier. Dark Water is about a woman going through an unpleasant divorce, who may or may not be suffering a mental breakdown. She and her daughter move into a new apartment, but something is very wrong with the building they live in. The remake isn't bad, just flat and not-very-scary so if subtitles aren't your thing you can check it out.
