Yes, I call watching cartoons so I can write accurate fic 'research'. Hush.

Virgil's skin is dry and his mouth tastes like a dirty gym sock by the time he finally feels safe to stop.
He has no idea where they are except that it's really, really not Dakota, and that it's a lot warmer. So maybe California or New Mexico. Texas. Fucking Mexico. They didn't cross over enough water to have left the continent, but that's about all he knows.
It's getting dark.
He stops before his energy gives out, but only barely, and if they drop the last couple inches to the ground, well, worse things could and have happened. He straightens slowly, working the kinks out of his back and legs, and only lets go of Richie as an afterthought.
