I picked up Green Rider by Kristen Britain today. The cover looked interesting and I remember [livejournal.com profile] sidara mentioning it positively when it first came out. I'm only a hundred or so pages in, but I'm enjoying it quite a lot. The main character, Karigan, is very likeable. She's completely out of her league and she doesn't try to pretend otherwise. There's some convenient magic every now and then, and it's looking like Karigan may have magical abilities, but she doesn't know that yet, and just keeps forging ahead. So far her reaction to the miracles that come her way are mostly "Oh thank GOD!" and not "I am so powerful nyeah, nyeah, nyeah!" She also manages to think on her feet instead of stumbling from glory to glory. There's a great scene where she ends up trapped in a web and little monster-hatchlings are trying to eat her, she's slowly being paralyzed by their venom, and she manages to grab her sword by the blade, slicing her hand up, to hack herself free.

She does get a lot of help, but it's done in a way that only reinforces her inexperience, rather than making her seem helpless. She's in over her head, so she needs help form the people she meets along the way. What I like is that, despite being scared, so far she hasn't tried to pawn the responsibility off on anyone else. She could have just dropped the message in a swamp when she realized how cruel the guys after her are, but she didn't. I like that.

So I guess I mean that this is definitely worth reading if you have a few extra bucks. ^_^
