It's like in YYH fandom, where Kurama is sexy evil man-whore of Makai and Kuwabara hates all women, even as he tries desperately to get laid by one. Ahh. Characterization. What a concept.
Additionally, if John didn't trust Rodney, he would not take Rodney on dangerous away missions armed with a handgun. Yeah, he's less likely to let Rodney play with the big guns, and he's probably pissed that he put his neck out for him with Weir - but I think he's more pissed that Rodney wouldn't listen to him when things started to go wrong. It seems to me he's not mad that Rodney was wrong so much as he's mad that Rodney wouldn't admit it.
Also? Rodney's not going to commit suicide because John got mad at him. He'd have killed himself back when he was sent to Russia, if he were going to do it at all.
