So, I decided to go for a walk before bed, which is pretty normal for me. I grab my walkman and a coat and go outside, and the first thing I see is two cop cars cruising down Old Point Ave in opposite directions. They pause, flash their headlights at each other and keep going.

"Huh," I think and keep walking.

One car pauses at the end of the block, at the intersection with Mercury, pulls onto the shoulder and sits there with his lights on. The other goes down, about midway to Bookman, and sits in the middle of the road with his lights on. Once they are in position, they again flash their headlights at each other. Further down, at the intersection of Old Point and Bookman, there is a third car, also parked on the shoulder, but he has his lights out. They all sit there as I walk by.

"Huh," I think and keep walking.

I go right on Bookman (left is a dead end under the overpass that leads into a gated community) and at the corner I see, you guessed it, more cops. Left there's a car sitting in the middle of the street (turning lane) with his lights on. Right, there's a car sitting in the middle of the street with his lights on. Straight there's a car (I assume it was a cop, I didn't go that direction) sitting in the middle of the street with his lights on.

"Interesting," I think, and turn right.

I pass the patrol car sitting in the road, and two more cars come from the direction of Mercury Avenue, driving very slowly. As I near the end of the block, another comes up from behind me and drives by very slowly.

Now, at this point, I'm thinking interesting thoughts about muggers or escaped convicts or something. At any rate, I decide that taking my usual route home (involving a narrow side street behind the 7-Eleven which is really a combination of a driveway and an alley, complete with dumpsters) is a bad idea. Not that I needed to worry, as it turns out - that little side road has two cop cars sitting in it, engines idling, lights on.

Seriously, this is a little much just for Halloween weekend, right?

I cut across the 7-Eleven parking lot, where another patrol car is parked (this is not terribly unusual, there are always cops there), although I do notice that someone is sitting in the backseat this time. It doesn't look like anyone is being arrested, as the back door is open and the officer is just leaning over and talking to the person, but now I'm thinking that maybe the 7-Eleven was robbed and they're trying to find the guy who did it.

I cross the parking lot and turn right at the intersection with E. Mercury, where another patrol car is parked, then walk the last hundred feet or so to the intersection with Old Point, where the first patrol car I saw is still parked. I turn down Old Point, another patrol car coming up from behind and driving by slowly, then turning around in a driveway halfway down the road and doubling back as I cross the parking lot and enter the stairwell.

I have no idea what's going on, but I'm definitely checking the papers tomorrow.
