Two weeks ago my uncle Bobby was committed against his will to an assisted living facility and placed under the care of a court appointed legal guardian. Everything is being paid for out of my uncle's savings account.
Some items of note.
My uncle is married. He has several children. He has five sisters and a brother, and more than thirty nieces and nephews - and every last one of us is of legal age.
Not one of us was notified. Including his wife and children. Uncle Bobby has been living alone for several months now after he and Aunt Betty mutually agreed that things just weren't working out anymore. The separation is not legal, no courts were involved, they are not divorced. They just own two houses now instead of one, and he lives in one and she in the other. She is still in his will, she is still listed as his next of kin, and she has his power of attorney. No one notified her.
She heard about it from one of her daughters, who heard about it from a friend who lives close to Uncle Bobby and heard about what was happening. She showed up for the hearing where the legal guardian was to be appointed, with the papers showing her as next of kin and having power of attorney, and they would not let her speak.
Uncle Bobby's own lawyer (court appointed, lawyer, I would like to point out) did not bother to contact any of his family. The home they've placed him in (which costs more per month than he makes, and which he is paying for) has no contact information for his family. When we called them earlier today, the woman we spoke with was unaware he had any family at all, let alone a wife and children who wanted to see him.
Aunt Betty is not allowed to see him. They say it's because they were separated. But they're not letting his kids, or any of the rest of us, talk to him either.
They put Uncle Bobby's house up for sale - the house that Aunt Betty legally owns half of. They won't let her in the house.
Something stinks to high hell in the state of Florida today, and I'm so furious I could hurt someone.
