I admit that I don't usually watch episode commentary. There's no particular reason, I just never seem to get around to it. It seems I've been missing out, though. I've been watching Hercules commentaries after [livejournal.com profile] ltlj directed me toward the one for Cast a Giant Shadow for an explanation of Iolaus's broken wrist and I am terribly amused.

There's one scene where Hercules is pounding a nail into what appears to be a wall made of grass and Kevin Sorbo's opinion is "I'm like Jesus. I'm a carpenter." Also, Michael Hurst is an "old fart" and he seems to be genuinely fond of the time he spent on the show.

I've been reading Hercules fic lately, which leads me into this minor rant:

Two rants, actually. One: While the revelation that Iolaus would die for Hercules was very emotionally written, it really shouldn't have been such a surprise, since your fic was clearly written after the end of the series and at that point Iolaus had already died for Hercules. Remember the Fire Enforcer? She was all "Where is Hercules?" and Iolaus was all "Gonna have to kill me, bitch." So she did and Iolaus pretty much dragged himself to Alcemene's where he warned Hercules about the Enforcer and then died in his arms. So, yes. Very dramatically written, but perhaps for the wrong reasons. Hercules knows Iolaus would rather die than betray him; his emotion is going to be coming from some other areas beside surprise.

Two: I have bad news for slash writers, but Iolaus is not the girl in that relationship. Iolaus is all "No mushy shit. Now cook me dinner." And Hercules is all "I really think we should discuss how this makes us feel and would you like garlic on your quail?"

I mean, seriously here. Michael Hurst may crossdress on occasion, but Iolaus is the butchest guy on that show.

Also, after rewatching Pride Comes Before A Brawl the other day, I've decided that Lydia is the absolute coolest guest-star they have ever had (aside from recurring regulars like Nebula and such) and that she needs to come back and hook up with Iolaus. Because she took all his shit and bragging for what it was, backed him up in a fight against a Hydra and a band of bandits, teamed up with him against Hercules (which few civilians are willing to do), went into monster-infested woods on her own when no one else was brave enough to do it because it needed to be done and found proof that there were no monsters, and was just very genuinely cool. I like her. I declare her Iolaus' evil female twin and wish she had come back.

And I just found Angela Field's fanfic again. Mmmm, Argosy. Now I want to watch Young Hercules. That really needs to be out on DVD.
