You know, when did it all become about pairings?

Lately it seems that's all anyone's interested in reading about, talking about and writing about. And hey, pairings are fun. I like John/Rodney. Rodney/Teyla. Teyla/Ronon. Radek/Elizabeth. Rodney/Miko. And that's just one fandom. So I have no problem with pairings.

But ship wars make me want to resign from fandom and possibly this corner of the human race. Who gives a shit if you like Ron/Hermione or Harry/Hermione? I certainly don't. So why does it matter if someone you've probably never met thinks Ron/Luna and Harry/Ginny is all the rage and that Hermione should run off with Krumm? Are they infringing on your rights or something? Or can you just not handle the idea that someone out there might not agree with you? Because that's what it looks like.

And Harry Potter fandom (while definitely the headliner in the Ship Wars) is not alone. If I hear one more YYH fan screeching and tearing her hair out because Hiei and Kurama would never ever like each other like that, (Hiei/Botan fandom, I'm looking at you) I'm gonna scream. And for the record? I don't care if you ship Yuusuke/Botan, but leave the Yuusuke/Keiko shippers alone.

When did it become impossible to just read and write and enjoy a story based on, you know, plot? When did the pairing of the fic become the holy grail? When did "genfic" become a dirty word?

Whatever happened to genfic? Stories with more plot than sex scenes? WHEN DID THE INTERNET BECOME A LAURELL K HAMILTON NOVEL?
