onemuseleftI have now seen all of Static Shock. Some thoughts:
1) The girls are nicely kickass. Sharon's my kind of girl. I like how Daisy doesn't take Virgil's crap, no matter how cute she thinks he is. Permafrost is intriguing and I want to write something with her. Plus Talon and Aquamaria. Also, Freida is hot.
2) Richie is too cute for words.
3) This fandom suffers from an upsetting lack of porn.
4) I actually like all the characters. Virgil and Richie are well rounded. Part teenage boy, part superhero, part kid brother, part science geek, etc. Sharon isn't just the annoying older sister, Sean isn't just a loud bigot, Francis isn't just a villain. Interaction isn't cookie-cutter, either. Virgil and Richie get on each others nerves, Virgil and his dad have their occasional fights, the girls get fed up with the boys being spazzes, the villains occasionally show a spark of redemption.
5) The finale was great, imo. I like how they managed to end the series just as all this stuff was happening - also, the build up for the several episodes prior contributed tothe dramatic tension (well, for a kiddie show...). After the Aquamaria episode, you knew something like this was happening, but you weren't sure what, exactly. On that same note, I like that they acknowledged that Gear's powers were very different from the others, and the loss of them would affect him very differently than Virgil or Hotstreak.
6) Did I mention the upsetting lack of porn?
I've heard people complain about the differences between the TV show and the comics, and I have to disagree. Yeah, they made changes, but the audience is radically different. The comic is geared for teenagers and young adults, the cartoon show has a Y7 rating. I consider it an AU, and a well-conceived one.
In short? Be wary fandom - there will be fanfic. Oh, yes. Be very wary.
