onemuseleftYu Yu Hakusho really just invites deathfic. Let's see, of the six main characters, Yuusuke has died twice, Kuwabara once (and faked it once), Kurama twice, Hiei once, and Genkai once, leaving Koenma, the Prince of Hell and second-in-command of the afterlife, as the sole survivor. Killing them off is canon, people!
That said, there's also the fact that you've got an assortment of mortal and immortal characters to play with. Half the cast is immortal, and they hang out with a variety of mortal characters. That's fun to play with. Yuusuke, who tends not to think very far ahead, or dwell on anything for very long, will outlive his wife and best friend. He'll probably outlive his children as well, since half-bloods in the YYH-verse tend not to be terribly impressive, and there's no guarentee that any child he has with Keiko will inherit any of his demonic abilities anyway. Kurama, who does think about this sort of thing, has a mortal mother he adores, and a human teammate he cares for a lot, and a variety of mortal friends whose deaths, while perhaps not earth-shattering, will still affect him greatly.
Even Hiei who wouldn't admit to it under torture, has formed attachments in the human world. How much fun is it to see how he reacts when people he alleges not to care about get old and die?
