Over in the YYH fandom -
Already I'm lying. I have little to do with the YYH fandom, to be honest. Frankly, it barely exists. There's more of a Kurama fandom and a Hiei fandom and occasionally a Kurama/Hiei fandom, and possibly the odd Yomi fandom. There's a large Anti-Kuwabara fandom, the bastards. But YYH fandom itself tends to be pretty rare.
So, let's try that again.
Over in the "Sonnet and Kelly like YYH and talk about it a lot and occasionally write stories which they never post anywhere" fandom, we occasionally like to mock Yuusuke. It's easy, it is. Mocking Yuusuke is one of those things you have to do to be in the fandom. He invites it, frankly, and I think he'd be very disappointed if ever we didn't live up to the challenge. Yuusuke is, shall we say, a scamp.
Well, okay, he's kind of a stupid jerk with the sensitivity of a brick wall. But that's what we like about him.
Anyway, I recently made the somewhat counterintuitive connection between Yuusuke and Iolaus, of Hercules fame.
What, you are probably asking yourself, has she been smoking?
Nothing interesting, I promise. Actually, the connection was inspired by the casual observation that they both spend a lot of time dead, dying, or about to become dead or dying. Iolaus has died four times in canon. Four. Count 'em. That's quite a lot, really. The entire cast of YYH put together has only died six times (Yuusuke in the first ep, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei and Botan in the Poltergeist Reports, and Yuusuke again in the Sensui Arc). Seven times if you want to get technical and count the Kuwabara/Toguro thing, which, in my head, Yuusuke always does. In a pissy tone of voice, too and usually with a snarky commentary in which the phrase "you complete asshole" is used frequently.
Once you get past that, they do have more in common. Attitude, for example. As in, they both have one. Between the two of them, if attitude was electricity, you could keep the lights on over the entire world for as long as they lived. And since Yuusuke's immortal and the afterlife has Iolaus' picture hanging on the wall with the words "Return to Sender - IMMEDIATELY" stamped over it, that could be a very long time.
They have similar ideas of how to have a good time, as well. Both like starting fights for fun. Iolaus is king of the "Let's kill some time before we leave for Corinth" bar fight, or the "I'm bored - let's see if I can sneak up on Herc and brain him with this club without him noticing!" school of self-entertainment. And whenever Yuusuke gets bored he just picks a fight with Kuwabara who is, shall we say, easy to provoke if you know what buttons to push.
Both like to fight giant monsters who are easily ten times their size for kicks.
Now, in terms of career choice, they are rather different. Iolaus fights monsters and demons because someone needs to, because the common people need to be protected and because it's a hell of a lot more fun than farming. Yuusuke fights monsters because Koenma tells him to. Also, he's a rowdy teenage boy so I suppose beating things up for a living is a little like a dream come true for him.
They are both extremely protective of their friends, although I think Yuusuke might be a bit inclined to possessiveness as well. Iolaus was once given the choice between betraying Hercules and being beaten to death and, well, let's just say that was #3 of 4. When Toguro killed Kuwabara and Genkai (I forgot about Genkai! That makes seven deaths, with a tentative eight), Yuusuke went batshit and, in his desperation to save the others, tapped into powers he didn't even know he had.
They're both a bit on the short side, but don't try to tell them that.
They have similar taste in best friends. Kuwabara and Hercules are somewhat calmer, a bit more level headed, and far more prone to idealism than either Yuusuke or Iolaus. The biggest difference here is that Iolaus is not as powerful as Hercules and makes up for it by being cunning. Kuwabara is far, far less powerful than Yuusuke, but makes up for it by being even vaguely intelligent.
(Actually, Kuwabara and Hercules have a few similarities themselves, mostly in temperament and personality, but that's another thing entirely.)
I forget what my point was.
Anyway, that's the sort of thing I think about at 12:52 in the morning.
